The technology to create 3D models from a single photo has been unveiled under the name MeInGame.
Looking at the results uploaded to the public repository, it is not yet enough to be applied to the service without the work of designers, but it is expected that it will significantly reduce the initial modeling effort. In addition, there are a number of services that use virtual avatarized characters instead of their real photos, and these services are expected to be useful. For example, examples include automatically creating and using a 3D character from a user profile picture, or automatically creating and using a game character design from a picture.

MeInGame is a paper published in AAAI 2021, and is implemented using PyTorch3D. The face model is said to utilize the Basel Face Model (BFM) created by 3D scanning the faces of 100 men and women each. Here is MeInGame's github repository.
